The Municipality of Alijó, characterized by its immense landscape, economic and cultural diversity, currently represents a vibrant potential for the tourism sector. As an integral part of the Douro World Heritage Site, Alijó possesses a vast heritage of vineyard landscapes where its greatest source of sustainability thrives – wine.
However, Alijó is much more than just a wine-growing landscape. It is mountains, forests, the rural character of the Trás-os-Montes villages, the hospitality of its people, its gastronomy, crafts, hunting, folklore, pilgrimages, and historical heritage.
The Municipality of Alijó, comprised of 14 parishes, is one of the most beautiful regions to enjoy wonderful days of rest with family, in the tranquility and comfort of the excellent hotels it offers. Alijó provides its visitors with a wide range of tourist infrastructure, as well as cultural and leisure activities that enrich its natural potential. This is the case with the cozy inns and hotels, the rural tourism houses, set in spaces where the senses are intoxicated with dreamlike images, and the immense wine tourism farms where the tourist's interaction with the very experience of the place is presumed, where wine is the protagonist and has many stories to tell.
Since Alijó is a privileged municipality from a landscape point of view, one of the options not to be missed is undoubtedly a tour of the magnificent viewpoints of the region, places of rare beauty where the immense verdant terraces can be seen, considered the most beautiful humanized landscape in the world.
To paraphrase the famous Douro poet and writer António Cabral... “(Douro, my beautiful country of wine and sweat, barbaric song torn from the rocky terrain by a destiny that makes us walk from the soul to the eyes, from the eyes to the soul!)”
The municipality is distinguished by its heterogeneity, so distinct from north to south. To the north, the cold mountains thrive with chestnut trees, cattle ranching, and an imposing forest reserve where hunting is practiced.
The south, full of terraced vineyards, sometimes green, sometimes ruby-colored, or even bare, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful humanized landscapes in the world, where the famous Port wine, the equally renowned Moscatel, and also excellent table wines are produced.
Visiting Alijó and experiencing its vast religious heritage, its ethnographic culture, its customs and traditions, and its delicious cuisine are more than enough reasons not to miss this territory!
The municipality of Alijó offers unique conditions for the development of various water sports, which it complements with nature sports.
