Lagos do Sabor await you!
The construction of the Baixo Sabor dam created a new landscape. The wild river gave way to three lakes: Lake Cilhades, Lake dos Santuários, and Lake Medal, where the calm waters are only interrupted by the untamed Sabor crags.
Lagos do Sabor progress through the mountainous gorges of Medal, passing through the wild Sabor crags, and culminating at the mouth of the Azibo River. Each lake, each crag, tells a story, hidden in the water or waiting to be unveiled in the hills.
The mouth of the Sabor River gives its name to the last fishing village in the lakes and is an integral part of the Douro Wine Region | UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this area, there is a river access point that allows small boats navigating the Douro to dock and from there discover the enchanting territory of the Sabor Lakes.
With the Douro River in the background, where the Sabor River flows into it, the Panoramic Automobile Circuit unfolds, offering stretches of landscape of high scenic value overlooking the Sabor Lakes. It features points of interest, connections to ecological trails, access to bodies of water, viewpoints, and informative and interpretive supports, allowing visitors to explore the region thematically and discover its unique secrets.
From south to north, we find the first lake, Cilhades, the largest of the three, named after a homonymous village in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo, now submerged. Through the Fraga do Fojo Gorge, Cilhades Lake connects to the Sanctuary Lake, so named because it encompasses the Sanctuaries of Cerejais, Our Lady of Jerusalem, and Saint Anthony of Barca.
The Sanctuary Lake narrows at Aguilhão, and from there, Medal Lake develops. To the north, the Sabor Valley narrows and plunges into a protected landscape of great natural value and unique biodiversity. In the Fragas do Sabor, you can immerse yourself in the discovery of the Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark, a UNESCO-recognized area, and explore rocks that tell stories of ancient oceans and continents. In Morais, known as the navel of the world, you can observe vestiges, materialized by the rocks, of an ancient ocean, the supercontinent Pangaea, and the Variscan mountain range.
