Visiting the Macedo de Cavaleiros Nautical Station is to discover a territory with UNESCO designations: Transboundary Biosphere Reserve; UNESCO Global Geopark; and the Caretos de Podence, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
There are many nautical experiences that these "Lands of water, open air, and nature" have at your disposal. Venture into canoeing, rowing, padel, windsurfing, and boat trips as tourist activities, enjoying the region's natural heritage. These activities support the training of high-level athletes or serve as a way to learn about the importance of preserving biodiversity. In addition to this diverse richness, UNESCO distinguishes this territory in three categories. The Geopark designation confers upon the region the quality of an attractive geotourism destination, unique in terms of geological and historical-cultural heritage, as well as its rich gastronomy, biodiversity, and local products.
The distinction of integration into the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of the Iberian Plateau with the Protected Landscape of the Azibo Reservoir guarantees this territory constant progress, due to its environmental quality, scenic beauty, and existing river beaches.
The Caretos of Podence, already recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, are proof of the preservation of the identity of this people, as are other significant legends and traditions. The points of interest in this territory of approximately 700km² don't end here! The marked trails allow you to explore the natural, historical, and cultural richness along 200km through different locations. Architecturally, there are also pillories, churches, and other monuments worth visiting. There are several museums, with diverse approaches, that allow you to learn about the history of this land.
Finally, there are various gardens and viewpoints that you can enjoy visiting and lingering in, to relax and contemplate. In addition to everything you have to visit and discover, the art of hospitality is guaranteed by the people of Macedo de Cavaleiros. Be amazed!
