Gondomar is a land of historical resonances. Several findings reveal the ancient roots of human experience in this place since prehistory.
The exploration of gold mines in nearby regions and vestiges on Monte Crasto prove the presence of the Romans in these lands.
Today, goldsmithing is still the main economic activity of Gondomar, earning the municipality the title of "Capital of Goldsmithing". The art of working this precious metal is a legacy that accumulates centuries of history, a result of the existence and exploitation of gold mines.
Filigree occupies a prominent place among the creations of local goldsmiths, making Gondomar the main center for the production of these intricate jewels.
Carpentry, and especially woodcarving, were also, for a long time, crucial to the economy of Gondomar. An art linked to the transformation of wood into delicate sculpted pieces, widely used in religious ornamentation. Also noteworthy is the construction of "valboeiros" boats, a typical Douro vessel used for artisanal fishing of shad and lamprey, and for transporting people and goods between the banks of the river.
